Swaps Cancelled, Time To Spring Clean!

Hi swappers!  Due to the corona virus and social distancing, Free Swaps will be taking a health break until it’s safe for group fun again.  Since you may have time on your hands being at home, feel free to go through your closets and storage and start compiling goodies to bring to free swaps when they start up again!

Another option would be to join your neighborhood Buy Nothing Group.  This is like free swapping, but on a person-to-person gift basis with your neighbors.  You may want to visit online with your gift recipient, and leave items on your porch for pickup.  Another suggestion is you may wish to agree ahead of time to wash/sanitize the object before gifting and after receiving. Just some options.

Volunteers Needed for the Holiday Gift and Toy Swap!

It’s time to volunteer for The 2019 Holiday Gift and Toy Swap! All volunteers assure themselves a place at the swap!  This is a fun holiday tradition for teens and adults to bring giftables they no longer want, and do their holiday shopping free! The date is Saturday December 14th, 2pm at the Evergreen Community Church gym in NE Portland 935 N.E. 33rd Avenue. Portland OR 97232. After we get our volunteers in place, I’ll post the Free Swap details and open up RSVP reservations to the general public on the Swap Positive site mid-November. Due to space constraints, and to keep the venue from being too crowded, all attendees need to be teens or adults (no children) and you must RSVP to the special email that will be created just for this event. If you volunteer, you assure yourself a space at this fabulous free frugal event!

Women’s and Kids Clothing Swap, Tigard, needs new volunteer host(s)

Swap co-hosts Barbara and Cindy have been hosting the Tigard Quarterly swaps for women and kids at the Colossae church location for over 9 years! Many women and families have had the thrill of free frugal fun, exchanging treasure, helping out the environment, and being philanthropists. Barbara and Cindy say that, due to busy stages of life for both of them, they need to step down as hosts and either close down this swap or pass it along to the next host.
If YOU would like to step forward and host these Tigard swaps at the Colossae church location (or start a swap in your size/interest at this location and time), Cindy said she’ll help you with the transition. 12244 SW Garden Place.  Date is 3rd Monday in September, January and April.  Handicapped accessible, adults only since venue is not fully childproofed. You can email Cindy at cindylou.eng@gmail.com   Cindy can give you helpful tips on how to start a free swap (she’s done most of the work already) and what to say at a free swap (ie what a host does).  It’s pretty simple and here’s why. Then, please contact me with the updated information so I can update this website and help give you free advertising for your swap!

Maternity and Baby Clothing to Kids size 10, Accessories  and Toy Swap (NW Portland, PCC Rock Creek Campus, 17705 NW Springville Rd, Portland OR 97229). Babies and Kids Size 0-6+ Clothing Exchange (Hillsboro) 9am-noon in the multi-purpose room at Harvest Community Church, 8215 NE Quantama Street, Hillsboro, OR 97006. This is a first-time swap!  If enough people show up to exchange kids size 0-6+ goodies, they will consider making it a regular event – so tell all your friends/families that have babies and little kids to come out and bring things they’re kids have outgrown that are clean and in good condition, and swap for new-to-you items that you love! For more information about this swap, contact Swap Coordinator Kelly at Mommafawn3@gmail.com

Yonder House Brunch & Story Swap, NE Portland, July 6th

What: Potluck Brunch and Story Swap

When: July 6th 2019, 10am-2pm.
We’ll provide at least baked oatmeal and coffee – please bring food to share, and a story to swap!

Big changes are happening at Yonder House and this will be a good way to hang out, get to know the new crew, and see a bit of what we’re up to now. Long story short, a couple just moved in who were living outside thanks to the help of generous donors, and our house is turning into a house of hospitality/public house, inspired by the Catholic Worker tradition of hospitality and the ideal of a neighborhood house to function as a social and trust economy hub. If you’re interested in such things, there are definitely ways to plug in.

Free Variety Show and Potluck, NE Portland, June 14th

Variety Shows are where people pick an interesting or ‘hidden’ talent and share it!

When: June 14th, 7pm-11pm,

What: Variety Show and Potluck! Share/swap a simple talent (Juggling? Music? Poetry? Wiggling your ears? Hand- stand?  Finger puppets? Jokes?  Art? Other?) and bring a drink or snack to share.

7pm show up to hang out, potluck, share drinks and snacks (feel free to bring something to share), and enjoy tasting the vegan coconut curry lentil stew that’s lovingly provided.  8pm the show begins / 9pm intermission hang out / 10pm ish chill after party. Swap Positive Advisory Board Wanted

Hi Swappers!

I’m looking for a Swap Positive Advisory board to explore next steps.  I started Swap Positive 14 years ago and it’s developed into an amazing way to benefit all stakeholders (Tokyo TV said they came over to interview me due to the high SEO of Swap Positive)!  However, since it’s just little ole’ me doing all the behind the scenes stuff, if something happens to me, Swap Positive would end!  I need an organization to share the responsibility.  Seeing that my passion and leadership has elevated my little volunteer social experiment into a high SEO powerhouse…it could now become self-supporting…but only with expert help!

Thus, why I’m looking for a Swap Positive Volunteer Advisory Board to explore next steps. I seek professionals who understand and support Swap Positive. Below is my dream advisory team (but I’m open to ANY help to create a way for Swap Positive to become self-sustaining!)

1. Business Advisor, to help expand Swap Positive so it’s funded and self-sustaining

2. Website Designer Current Site on unsupported template and losing functionality.  I’ve purchased the domain names SwapPositive.com and SwapPositive.org.  Site needs to be made easier to navigate.  Venues, swap hosts, and non-profit picking up remainders need to more easily connect.  A calendar that is easy for everyone to read, and venues and hosts can update their swap info themselves without affecting other entries. A donate button needed.

3. Lawyer I started Swap Positive as a hobby for fun.  How can we move this towards a self-supporting organization while keeping it easy and fun for me and for all free swappers?

4. Accountant/CPA  When/if we get money from donations, investment, business, etc. how do we structure the company so that staff and bills get paid?

5. B- Corp Liaison  Swap Positive and B-Corps share much of the same mission.  Let’s figure out how we can partner

6. Government liaison How can government support Swap positive to keep usable items out of landfills, fill community needs for free?  We’ve had good input in the past, but I’d like an ongoing liaison to advise me.

7. Business Liaison Swap Positive brings in customers through free venue association, benefits company recycling goals, and provides free employee benefits. Let’s connect with businesses for mutual benefit!

8. Venue liaison Person to compile list of venues willing to host swaps, keep information updated on website.

9. Non-profit liaison Person to compile list of non-profits who’ll pick up remainders, keep information updated on website.
