If you are a women or teen between the sizes of 10 – 14, Amy Alice hosts a free swap just for you! Here’s Amy to tell you all about what to bring, what to expect, how to reserve your space at her swap, and more:
It’s time for you to think about all of those clothes and accessories in your closet that you don’t wear, that don’t fit, that you no longer use or want, and that NEED a new life and someone else to wear and enjoy them!
Clean out your closets, storage, and accessories drawers, and wash up all of those items in good condition that you don’t want/wear anymore. Bring everything wearable to this swap.
WHERE: Jazzercise Fitness Center, East Burnside at 18thThe Jazzercise Fitness Center is located at 18th and East Burnside. It is across the street from East Burn restaurant, and a bit kitty corner from the Whole Nine Yards (a terrific fabric store).
There is a class there from 9:30 until 10:30 if you would like to try that out first, and then swap with us at 11:00. It’s REALLY fun, energetic, and good exercise. The first class is free if you’d like to give it a try! I plan on going to Jazzercise that day, so just let me know if you would like to go to the class, and I can “show you the ropes”!
The Jazzercise Center has a large parking lot right there at 18th and East Burnside. Go into the lot, park your car or bike, and enter the mocha colored building through the door that is on the parking lot side of the building. Go through the door, walk straight to the back (East), and find the door that leads you upstairs. Walk up the stairs, and you have ARRIVED at the medium/large swap!!
There are two buses that drop off right in front of the center (the #20 and the #19), so that is an option for transportation too! You can also take the #12, it drops you off on Sandy, and you can walk on over from there.WHAT to BRING: CLEAN clothes, in good condition, (no hangers needed), accessories, shoes, purses, jewelry, belts, gloves, mufflers, scarves, ~ basically…any wearables. Wash them up and bring them along to add to the swap.
PLEASE WASH YOUR CLOTHING EVEN IF YOU THINK ITEMS ARE PROBABLY CLEAN. THANKS!!
You will also want to bring something to carry your stuff home in…bags or boxes or bins or SOMEthing!
A few things I would like to remind all of you about when it comes to swapping:
1. Check the pockets for tissues, gum, money, items of value…unless you want to leave the money and treasures to offer someone else as a bonus!!
2. PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE…Bring CLEAN clothes to the swap. That means…WASHthe clothing before bringing it to swap. Everyone wants to get CLEAN things to try on and to keep.
3. Only bring clothing, accessories, shoes, and WEARable items…save your “stuff” for another swap. We DO HAVE “stuff” and “gift” swaps, but this is NOT one of those.
4. This is a clothing swap ~ not a fabric swap, so just the legs of pants, or sweaters with a sleeve missing, are not usable items for those of us coming to a clothing swap. We don’t want “rags” at our swaps. I’m sure you understand since YOU probably don’t want those items either!
5. No money changes hands with these clothes ~ even if you get them home and decide they aren’t quite “you”, we ask that you GIVE them away to someone ~ or bring them to the next swap! That is the mission of these swaps.
Here’s how it works…
We start on the hour of 11:00 AM, so please be here BEFORE to put out your clothes and so we can all start at the same time. We WILL begin right at 11:00.
There won’t be dressing rooms, so I would suggest that you wear something like spandex/yoga/bike clothes/swimsuit under your regular clothes if you’d rather not “dress down” to try on the items. You will want to try things on, so dress so you can do that and be comfortable in this space. There will only be women here at the swap.
All of the clothes will be kept in the center of the room, in their bags/bins/boxes, while we wait for the hour of the swap.
The shoes, purses, accessories, and jewelry will be in a separate pile up on the stage, for ease of looking for items.
When you get here before 11:00, we will all empty our stuff into rows on the floor. After you empty your clothes out, please step back until everything is emptied onto the floor and is ready.
Things in the middle of the room in rows are free. The items in little piles around the room, against the walls in bags, or on chairs are someone’s “stash”, so please leave them be.
When everything is in rows, I will say, “Go!” That way, there is no “pre-shopping”, and everyone has the same opportunity to find new clothes!
Take what looks good to you, put it into your pile, get some items saved up, then try stuff on before you take it home. See how great you look in one of the four mirrors I will have there for you. If it doesn’t fit or look “right” for you, throw it back into the pile so someone else can see if it fits her.
Bring along a bag(s)/box(es) to carry your treasures home.
Please support our mission by enjoying the swap as a place to get free stuff, and if you part with your new-to-you swap items, we ask that YOU do it in a free way too!
Leftover clothes will be donated to the Portland Clothes Closet; will pass the clothes along for free.
There is no limit to the amount of items you bring or the amount you take home with you. We ask that you be courteous and generous with each other. If you can use it ~ take it ~ enjoy it!
You CAN make a positive difference by recycling your clothes.
Please feel free to pass this information on to your female friends, and have them contact me so I may have them on my swap list. The more people who come, the better the selection of clothes for everyone.
Should you bring your children?
NO…because this is a facility with exercise equipment and computers in it, and it is not MY facility (it is a Jazzercise Fitness Center that Rich, the owner, has graciously allowed us to use), I would ask that you please do NOT bring your young children…unless you also bring a babysitter with you, or unless they are old enough to manage on their own. Young adults are more than welcome!
Please, do NOT bring: children’s clothes, clothes that are larger than women’s size 14 or smaller than size 10, clothes that are ripped/stained/dirty/smelly/not wearable, or any “stuff”. Please take your non size 10-14 clothes to the appropriate venue. Thanks for your understanding.
